Why Whitby?
Whitby will always feel like a second home to me after spending much of my childhood holidays there, it’s a place I always love returning to now with my family and remembering the good times we had with family. Now it’s a place I recommend for wholesome family getaways that never disappoint.
There’s something special about Whitby — a charm that clings to your clothes like the salty sea air and lingers long after you’ve left. Nestled on the rugged North Yorkshire coast, this historic fishing town has stolen a piece of my heart, and I think it might just steal yours too.
For me, Whitby is where time slows down. It’s a place where you can wander cobbled streets lined with quirky shops, breathe in that unmistakable delightful smell of fish and chips wrapped in paper, and feel the calmness as you can spend hours watching fishing boats bob in the harbour. Unhurried, but full of life.
Moments That Made Me Fall in Love
-
The View from the Abbey Steps – Climbing the famous 199 steps to Whitby Abbey is an absolute must do when in Whitby. At the top, you’re rewarded with amazing views of the town and endless waves rolling in from the North Sea.
-
A Taste You’ll Remember – In my opinion Whitby serves up some of the best fish and chips in the UK. My go-to? Magpie Café — but be prepared to queue if you don’t book in advance, but don’t worry it’s worth every minute.
-
Gothic Whispers – Fans of Dracula will know Whitby as the place where Bram Stoker found inspiration. There’s a wierdly eerie atmosphere in certain corners of the town, especially on a misty evening. As the home to gothic weekends throughout the year it must be felt by more than me.
-
Beachcombing Bliss – Cayton Bay, just up the coast, is one of my happy places. Perfect for long walks, sea glass hunting, and watching the sun sink into the horizon.
When to Go
Whitby is magical year-round, but I love visiting in Summer or early Autumn. But whenever you go you’re sure to have a great time and be welcomed by the locals.
From Me to You
If you’re looking for a getaway that blends history, scenery, and good old-fashioned seaside charm, Whitby is a place to put on your list for a wholesome family, or a romantic getaway. Go with an open heart and let it surprise you — I promise, it’s one you’ll never forget.
